front black out. my 2 cents

Post  enkrypter_DJ on Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:59 pm

Everyone wants to do the front blackout on the lancer. Unless your lancer is black. these are some options and what i think of them.

Kit from the dealership. 180$ and useless.

fiber glass or carbon fiber insert found @ RRM or Scorpion kits and other websites.
They require cutting the front bumper and removing safety foam from inside and then using silicone or other adhesives to stick them on. I think its too much work and non reversible if u screw it up. Also more expesinve then painting it the front black

Plasti dip (the cheapest option)
15$ a can, ull need 2 cans or more if u want it to last long as ull need to spray alot of it.
Fairly easy to apply and comes off easy as well. but its impossible to clean bugs off it and dust gets stuck in the texture then u have lines in it scrubbing too hard. I used it for one day on the bumber and took it off. also had it on some interior pieces in my previous car and it was impossible to keep clean.

Painting it black.
Unless done right its going to peel off and chip. Ever price a pint of paint and clearcoat with hardner for our lancers? You would think its made of gold.

Vinyl
I chose matt black vinyl for my car as i think its the most effective for the price its cleanable and weatherproof. cost ranges from 60$ to 80$ installed onto the car. you can also get carbon fiber look or any color you want. Vinyl is never 100% perfect and easily replaced if it ever does get damaged. Do not buy a precut kit as it will look like the dealer kit.

Other options, Evo look-a-like front bumper but then your just wasting money because its expensive and stock fog lights wont fit in those and painting to match is not easy if you have never done it before.

As for the chrome grille. 80$ plus shipping will get a new black grille from Mitsubishiparts.net

Ill fix spelling mistakes later

I put the vinyl on also and did the plasti-dip for my grill. I used one full can on my grill and I don't have any problems with bugs or dirt sticking but I let it cure for 48hrs before replacing it.

I have a black GTS so painting it isn't the issue for me, but when I picked up the car they put my plate on by screwing it directly to the centre strip. I was thinking of getting the off-centre plate holder and replacing the chrome trim at the top, but how would I patch those screw holes?

Thanks, now is there any way to get the chrome accent around the entire grill like the Ralliart without replacing the whole front bumper? Or is it just better to get the blacked out accent?

I don't like the lower chrome option.

awesome info. I contacted the guy that you went with, and he said $100 for the bumper cap. so... little more pricey than we might've thought i guess, but still might go for it. if its good quality

i believe that 57$ blackout kit is only for the front bumper, not the blacked DE grille as well. It's the DE grill that add's so much price
