Brake pads

Post  jamdread on Tue Sep 21, 2010 7:43 pm

Any places locally to order brake pads for my evo? Need front pads replaced.

Was gonna order some magic pads from www.girodisc.com but I figured if there is someone locally it would be a bit easier.

Ok, just left a message for a friend of mine who would most probably know 'if and where' they can be purchased locally.

Thanks !

Girodisc has their magic pad package for US$199 which includes a full set front and rear along with shims. I'm still waiting for them to give me a price for just the fronts.

I do have some vibration in my front rotors which the dealer said was from slight rotor warp. They said it wouldn't affect brake performance and it hasn't so I don't think i'm going to replace the rotors just yet. I'll buy the pads and see how things go first.

I have the service manual for the Evo X (very handy if ya wanna know absolutely everything about your car hehe) and I checked the min brake pad thickness. Minimum is 2mm and i'm at about 3.5mm right now so i'm due for a switch

Gonna pick up a micrometer and check my rotor thickness to make sure all is good there or I might have to get rotors as well. The prices from the dealer are outragious hehe.

Also got an aluminum/steel floor jack from costco for $99 bux and it's awesome hehe. So i'll be able to change my own brakes/pads, bleed/flush brake fluid etc etc. Good times.

Here's a pic of the jack I got

http://forums.redflagdeals.com/costco-big-red-2-5-ton-alum-steel-floor-jack-powerbuilt-triple-jack-2-5-ton-99-a-942530/

For some reason the pic shows the jack as black but it's actually red.

The $65 CAN + HST is for the front 'set'...they also have other sets to fit the Evo ranging in choices at $29.97, $49.78 and $84.00, all prices are for a complete set for the front brakes.
They will install them here for aprox $50 if you don't want to do it yourself.

For that car really look into what you are getting for that price. Get them where you and where you are comfortable with but REALLY do your homework. I know you pay more for a name such as Hawk or EBC but they are street and track tested.

Absolutely, yet when they are needed frequently like every two years then one has to think of cost and quality combined, or one could become very car poor with all the things that will be cropping up in the next bit. You also pay twice the price for name brands which doesn't necessarily mean better quality in fact it could mean worse. I'm reminded of a study where they put two jars of facial cream with the exact same ingredients on the label and side by side on the same shelf...one was marked with a brand name for $200 and the other generically marked at $30. They sold more of the $200 cream...go figure. Yes, research is the key, but buying name brands because of a name isn't necessarily the best way either.
