Wax and Rust Proofing

Everyone,

I have heard various things about waxing and rust proofing in preparation for the Ottawa winters. I am originally from Vancouver - we have no idea what winter is - LOL

Anyways, my two questions are:

1. What is the best kind of wax to use to combat the winter salt? Currently I am using good-old Turtle Wax but the buffing off is a pain. I have heard some of the one-application products are good but no specific recommendations. Help!
2. What do people recommend for rust proofing. Friends have been recommending an oil undercoating, the electronic box and other products. What do you folks recommend and where can I get it done?

It all depends on how long you plan to keep your car for and how much $'s you have in what you want to do and how much you hate rust. Know that the Ottawa area will probably make your car rust faster than many other places as the rust starts after the temp rises above zero (which often happens here) and there is just tons of salt on the roads here too.

1)-The box...Heavy duty equipment sitting in the field and having the module on had significantly less rust than the equipment that didn't have it on. The people who say this technology doesn't work are talking about the original technology that was invented for ships and subs or for those who applied it after the car was already rusting because it was a few years old. If you're going with the box/module, get the inexpensive CT one (as it's the original patented module) and it should be going onsale probably soon for about $200 as it goes on sale frequently...they will install for I think around $70-100. No car of mine will ever be without a module after undertanding the research, as no oil or other rust product can get to every metal aspect of a car which is actually rusting from the inside out.

2)-I also go to Luxe to additionally protect/rustproof vulnerable areas of my 'winter driver' car (Subaru) on top of having the module because of the climate conditions here and because the Subie had already started some rust when I purchased it used and I need it extra protected therefore. Modules will only slow the process as once rust starts it's difficult to halt.

3)-Paint protector/wax is a good idea to fill in the microscopic paint chips...always hear good things about Luxe on this as well. Because my cars are already protected up the ying yang with clearbras, etc, I wash them frequently in the winter and use the spray on wipe off easy to use detailers. Found the Nufinish "cling" works amazing to protect if you don't want to break your arm off waxing...just easy on and protects better than 3X's the normal spray-on ones. If you want the one time paint protectors, the dealership can sell you them for a costly price or you can go to autopia.org and they will recommend the best one on their detailing site for you to apply and I know there's a new one out that some on the site were recently hailing or you can do your own research...I have the one time paint protector on the Evo from the dealership and I love it and I've used the one time paint protectors on previous cars that I've applied myself and they even remove fairly deep scratches because it fills in so well but they're friggin very difficult to apply and if you don't have a electric polisher you will certainly break your arm off applying this stuff...took me a full day to apply it on one nice summer day by hand to one car and my arm was sore for a few days...lol...I've since bought an electric polisher for the Subaru for next year to apply the one timer but for this year I'm going to see how the Subaru fairs with just the Nufinish, cause the stuff appears to seal very well and water just beads right off.

Anyways, that's all I know, but module should be #1 choice IMO for rust and for paint if you're on a budget and need ease of use then try the Nufinish and if not go to Luxe as they do a great job on anything they've done for me and if you have time I so do like the one timer paint protectors..but borrow or buy a $30 polisher. Very Happy
